Resident Spotlight: Edith Allen

Known in the past as the “shoebox lady,” Edith Allen said she used to spend lots of time packing shoeboxes with daily care needs to send to children in underprivileged countries when she was a Sunday school teacher. It’s one of many gratifying pastimes she has had. Friends consider her to be easygoing, hardworking and always willing to give 100%.

Edith moved here in January 2019. She was drawn to Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center because she needed a skilled therapy facility. She said our Effingham, Illinois community was her first choice. Whether you’re here for a short stay for rehabilitation or an extended period for skilled nursing care, residents are offered choices based on taste preferences. Our unique approach to therapy includes indoor and outdoor spaces designed to promote healing.

Favorite Parts of Our Community

Now that she’s lived here and is well acclimated to our lifestyle, she still appreciates the cleanliness of our community, her relaxing room and the friendly nurses.

Edith said, “I enjoy my comfortable room. I like my space and quiet time. I also enjoy the ability to order different menu options in the dining room.” Wholesome, flavorful meals are prepared by our cooks and dietitians who can cater to special diets. Nutritional snacks are also available all day.

Background and Family

Edith was born in San Diego and moved to Illinois when her mother became ill and passed away, leaving her father alone. She’s resided in Effingham since 1996. She worked at World Color for 17 years.

“My favorite things to do are coloring and attending church services,” she said. “I love God and my family – I am blessed.”
